Coming off an opening round win, the IRSC softball team advanced to round two of the 2017 FCSAA State Softball Tournament at Historic Dodgertown in Vero Beach.
The win placed the Pioneers in a 6:30 PM game against the Manatees of State College of Florida. A win would get the team out of day one of the tournament as one of only four teams to get through Friday unscathed and remain in the winner's bracket heading into the Saturday match-ups.
Auria Mounts got the nod from Head Coach, Dale Atkinson as the starting pitcher under the lights. Through two innings, she silenced the bats of SCF with some outstanding defense behind her. Teammate, Morgan Greco, made an incredible grab in the field to end the 2nd inning threat of SCF, leaving two stranded on the bases.
Indian River came out swinging opening up a 3-0 lead in the first inning. Michalyn Bingham had a two RBI double in inning two, extending the lead. By the end of two, 'The River' was up 6-0 and in control of the game.
SCF was able to scratch out a run in the third, but IRSC's Steffany Collins was quick to respond with a solo homerun in the 4th. Heading into the top of the fifth, IRSC had a 7-1 lead and Mounts was in control on the mound.
With the chance to close out the game under the 'run rule' in the sixth inning, the Pioneers sent a hefty part of their line-up to the plate. Jaci Atkinson and Michalyn Bingham both reached base. On a past ball from the pitcher, Atkinson was able to score and Bingham advanced to third base. With Collins at the plate and a 2-1 count, the SCF pitcher left one hanging and Collins took full advantage sending it over the left-center field fence. The homerun was number two of the day for her and ended the game with a 10-1 victory.
Indian River has now advanced to round three of the winner's bracket and will play the winner of the Seminole vs. Northwest Florida game at 12 PM tomorrow.
