FORT MYERS, FL- Indian River State College dropped both games on Saturday, February 22 to Florida Southwestern, falling 5-2 in game one and 1-0 in game two. With the losses, the Pioneers move to 12-5 overall and 3-3 in the Citrus Conference.
Game 1
Offensive struggles were the difference in the Pioneers' 5-2 loss. Indian River managed just five hits over seven innings, with freshman Jacob Souza being the bright spot, going 2-for-2 with a double and a triple. Brett Patten and Jake Weatherspoon each recorded an RBI, while Scout Simpson added two stolen bases.
Javi Miranda took the mound for the Pioneers, pitching four innings and allowing three runs on six hits while striking out four. The freshman was charged with the loss. Sophomore Andris Barroso threw two innings in relief, allowing two runs and striking out one.
The Pioneers held a 2-1 lead heading into the bottom of the fourth, but a pair of walks and timely hitting by FSW turned the momentum. The Buccaneers scored two runs in both the fourth and fifth innings to take control of the game, securing the 5-2 victory.
Game 2
Offensive struggles continued for the Pioneers in game two, as they were shut out 1-0. Indian River managed just three hits and left seven runners on base in the loss.
Freshman Shane Lavin, from Spruce Creek High School, delivered a strong outing on the mound, pitching seven innings while striking out six and allowing only one run. This marked the longest appearance by an Indian River pitcher this season. The left-hander carried a no-hitter into the fifth inning before surrendering his first hit. Jonathan Wolaver followed in relief, tossing a scoreless inning.
The game remained tied 0-0 until the seventh, when FSW scratched across the only run of the game. Indian River had the go-ahead run on base twice in the ninth but was unable to capitalize.
The Pioneers will look to get back on track this Tuesday, February 25 as they host Polk State College in non-conference action under the lights.
