The River Sweeps Santa Fe
GAINESVILLE, FL – Indian River State College swept Santa Fe College on the road Saturday, March 1 taking the final two games of the series. The Pioneers claimed game one with a 13-3 victory in five innings, ending via the mercy rule, and secured a 12-11 win in game two. The sweep improves their record to 15-6 overall and 6-3 in Citrus Conference play.
Indian River got the scoring started early in game one, plating five runs in the top of the first inning, highlighted by a two-RBI triple from Jake Weatherspoon. The offense stayed hot in the second, adding four more runs, including freshman Jacob Souza's first career home run.
The Pioneers' offense piled up 15 hits in the game. Lucena and Weatherspoon led the lineup, each collecting three hits, while Souza drove in three runs. Matty Davis continued to swing a hot bat, adding two hits.
On the mound, Shane Lavin earned his third win of the season and recorded the first complete game of his career. Runs were plentiful in game two, as the Pioneers battled back to secure a 12-11 win and complete the sweep. Santa Fe jumped out to a 4-1 lead in the bottom of the first, but Indian River chipped away in the second, cutting the deficit to 4-3. In the fourth, Matty Davis hit a solo home run, and Jake Weatherspoon delivered a two-RBI single to put the Pioneers on top. Indian River added four more runs in the fifth to extend their lead.
