The River Opens Citrus Conference Play with 5-0 Shutout Victory
SANFORD, FL - Indian River opened Citrus Conference play in dominant fashion Thursday, shutting out Seminole State 5-0.
The River struck first in the opening inning when EJ Burns led off the game with a double, advanced to third on a dirt ball, and then Andy Schroeder lifted a sacrifice fly to bring home the game's first run. That early momentum set the tone for the rest of the afternoon as Indian River controlled the game from start to finish.
Shane Lavin earned his third win on the mound, improving to 3-0 on the season after tossing five shutout innings. The left-hander allowed just two hits while striking out four and walking two, consistently working ahead in the count and keeping Seminole State off balance. Anthony Linares closed the door in relief to secure the save and preserve the shutout for The River's pitching staff.
Indian River continued to apply pressure offensively throughout the game. EJ Burns finished with a strong day at the plate, while Jacob Souza and David Pina each added a hit. Schroeder, Souza, and Robert Kramer each drove in a run as The River capitalized on scoring opportunities and executed situational baseball to extend the lead.
Seminole State collected five hits on the day from Jackson, Vega, Hurt, Mikay, and Lluberes, but Indian River's pitching staff kept them off the board and delivered a complete team defensive effort to secure the win.
With the victory, Indian River improves to 8-3 overall and 1-0 in Citrus Conference play. The River will host the Raiders on Saturday for a doubleheader to finish the series as conference competition continues.
