The River Outlasts Florida Southwestern
FORT PIERCE, FL - There were runs aplenty on Thursday, as Indian River beat Florida Southwestern State College 9-7. The River collected 13 hits, while the Bucs had nine.
Despite falling down by five runs in the first inning, the Bucs tried to fight back. Florida Southwestern closed the gap by scoring on a solo home run, a single, a walk, a walk, a single, and another solo home run.
The River got on the board in the bottom of the first inning after David Pina drew a walk, scoring one run; Cam Baker singled to bring home one run; Vinny Dinzeo singled to score two runs; and Nico Lopez grounded out to drive in another.
Florida Southwestern jumped into the lead in the top of the third when Talarico drew a walk to score one run, Demetree drew a walk to score another, and Coston singled to drive in two runs.
The River captured the lead, 7-6, in the bottom of the fourth after Andy Schroeder singled down the left field line and Cam Baker singled down the right field line, each scoring one run.
Talarico homered to right field in the top of the fifth to tie the game at seven for the Bucs.
A home run to left field by EJ Burns gave The River the lead, 9-7, in the bottom of the fifth.
Jonathan Wolaver pitched three innings in relief for The River. The right-hander allowed two hits and one run while striking out three and walking two. Max Gonzalez got the start for The River, giving up three hits and two runs over two innings while striking out five and walking one. McLaughlin opened the game for Florida Southwestern and surrendered two hits and five runs (three earned) over one inning, striking out one and walking two.
The River finished with 13 hits in the game. Cam Baker led the way, going 3-for-5 at the plate. Andy Schroeder, Jacob Souza, and David Pina each collected multiple hits for The River. The River also turned one double play.
The Bucs tallied nine hits. St. Antione and Coston each collected two hits. Talarico, Demetree, and Coston each drove in two runs. April-Gath led the Bucs with two walks as the team showed patience at the plate, drawing nine walks in total. Coston also stole two bases, helping the Bucs pile up three stolen bases in the game. The Bucs turned two double plays.
Indian River improves to 10-11-1 overall and 3-7 in Citrus Conference play. The River will be heading to Florida Southwestern on Saturday for two games as they look to win their first series of the year.
