The River Stays Unstoppable at the Paradise Cove Tournament
FORT MYERS, FL- Indian River State College continued its dominant run at the Paradise Cove Tournament, adding two more wins to their undefeated weekend. With stellar pitching, aggressive baserunning, and powerful hitting, the Pioneers secured a 3-0 shutout against the College of Southern Idaho before overpowering Spoon River in a 10-2 victory. Their all-around performance across both games further solidified their strength as they continue to defend their 2024 State and National Championship.
In their first matchup of the day, The River delivered an impressive 3-0 win over the College of Southern Idaho, powered by a lights-out performance from J'dah Girigorie. The right-hander was nearly untouchable, allowing just one hit across seven innings while striking out nine and walking only one. She recorded all 21 outs, keeping the opposing lineup in check with precision and dominance.
Offensively, Presley Smith set the tone early. In the first inning, she singled to drive in the game's first run and followed up with another RBI single in the second to extend the lead. Smith finished a perfect 2-for-2 at the plate, driving in all three of IRSC's runs and proving to be an offensive sparkplug. The Pioneers showcased their depth at the plate, with Girigorie, Kassidy Pontbriant, and Smith each collecting two hits. Their aggressive baserunning was once again on display, as the team swiped seven bases, led by Anaise Piar with two steals. Defensively, Indian River played a flawless game, committing no errors, with Taylor Cochran making a team-high ten defensive plays.
Riding their momentum into the second game of the day, the Pioneers dominated Spoon River in a 10-2 victory. Presley Smith once again stole the spotlight, going a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate, including a towering home run to right field in the fifth inning. She also added singles in the first and fourth innings, consistently finding ways to produce runs. The game saw an early 2-2 tie in the second inning after Jordyn Lillis delivered an RBI single for The River. However, Indian River took control in the third when Sophia Loreto drove in a run to regain the lead. The offensive explosion came in the fifth inning, where the Pioneers tacked on four more runs on three hits. Piar delivered a clutch two-run single, followed by Smith's two-run homer to break the game open.
On the mound, Hanna Deschambault secured the win with a solid four-inning performance, allowing just three hits and two runs while striking out three. Abril Gomez closed out the game with a clean inning in relief. Indian River's offense continued to fire on all cylinders, racking up 15 hits and stealing eight bases. Lillis and Smith led the charge, each collecting three hits.
Indian River wrapped up the weekend with a flawless 4-0 record, including three shutout victories and two run-rule shortened games. Across 23 innings of play, the Pioneers posted 30 runs on 45 hits, drew 11 walks, and swiped an impressive 27 bases. Defensively, they were just as dominant, surrendering only two runs (one earned) on nine total hits while striking out 25 batters and walking only two. With their relentless energy and precision, The River has once again made a statement, proving they are more than ready to defend their championship title.
