Softball Dominates at NFCA Leadoff Classic – Day 1
COLUMBUS, GA- Indian River State College softball made a statement on the opening day of the NFCA Leadoff Classic in Columbus, GA, delivering dominant victories to set the tone for the tournament. The River showcased a powerful combination of explosive offense, lockdown pitching, and aggressive baserunning. With standout performances at the plate and in the circle, Indian River set the tone for a successful tournament and looks to build on this momentum moving forward.
Game 1:
Indian River kicked off the NFCA Leadoff Classic in impressive fashion, dominating Danville Area Community College with a decisive 9-0 victory.
The scoring began in the second inning when Thaima Maximiliana delivered a clutch single, bringing home the first run of the game. The momentum continued in the third inning as IRSC added three more runs to their tally. An error by the Danville defense allowed one run to score, followed by a powerful homer from Kassidy Pontbriant, who crushed a two-run shot to center field.
In the fifth inning, The River extended their lead with two additional runs. Sophia Loreto launched a solo home run, and Nyasia Williams added an RBI single to cap off a strong offensive display.
On the mound, J'dah Girigorie was stellar, earning the win by pitching four innings, allowing only one hit, and striking out nine batters without issuing a walk. Pontbriant led the charge with two RBIs, while Sarah Phipps showcased her speed with two stolen bases. Indian River's dominant performance set the tone for the rest of the tournament.
Game 2:
The River secured their second win of the day with a commanding 13-1 victory over Monroe University.
The scoring started early, with Pontbriant grounding out in the first inning to bring in the first run. The second inning saw Indian River extend their lead to 5-0, thanks to a timely single from Maximiliana, an error that allowed another run, and a two-run homer from Presley Smith that energized the squad.
The River blew the game open in the third inning. A dropped third strike and two errors contributed to the scoring frenzy, while Braylee Shields tripled to drive in another run. Smith continued her strong performance with an RBI single, followed by Pontbriant's double and Ciara Gendron's two-run homer to right field, putting the game well out of reach.
On the mound, Hanna Deschambault was dominant, allowing zero hits and just one unearned run over three innings while striking out six. Gendron came in for relief and maintained the shutout, striking out one and allowing no hits in two innings of work.
Offensively, Smith and Gendron each collected two hits, with Smith leading the team with three RBIs. The River also showcased their speed on the bases, stealing an impressive 10 bases. Indian River wrapped up the day with one final matchup at 6:30 p.m. against Pearl River Community College.
