Indian River Battles for Gritty Wins Over Miami Dade

FORT PIERCE, FL- The first game was an exciting start to the doubleheader against Miami Dade College. Indian River came out on top with a 3-1 victory in a tightly contested pitcher's duel. J'dah Girigorie took the mound and delivered an outstanding performance, allowing only two hits and one unearned run while striking out eight batters and walking none. Her command and composure were key to the team's success in this game.

The game remained scoreless until the bottom of the sixth, when The River finally broke through with a couple of timely singles. Kassidy Pontbriant stepped up when it mattered most, delivering a clutch hit that brought in two runs and put Indian River on the board. She finished the day with a solid 1-for-3 performance and led the team with two RBIs. Miami Dade put up one unearned run in the top of the seventh inning, but The River's defense was strong and held them there.

The lineup showed depth, with contributions from Sarah Phipps, Anaise Piar, McKenzie Gibson, Girigorie, and Presley Smith, all of whom added hits to the total. Notably, Piar also showcased her speed on the bases, stealing two bases to keep the pressure on Miami Dade's defense.

In a thrilling conclusion to the doubleheader, Indian River secured an 8-7 walk-off victory in dramatic fashion, showcasing resilience and determination throughout the game. Presley Smith was the star of the show, going 3-for-3 at the plate, including a two-run, 10th-inning, game-winning home run. The towering bomb over the right-field fence sealed the doubleheader sweep for The River. Smith also doubled in the sixth and singled in the third, making her a key contributor to Indian River's offensive efforts.

Miami Dade took an early 3-0 lead in the second inning, but The River tied the game in the bottom of the third with a double from Braylee Shields, followed by a single from Thaima Maximiliana and a sacrifice fly by McKenzie Gibson. Miami Dade continued their fight and regained the lead in the fifth inning. However, in the bottom of the sixth, an error by Miami Dade allowed Indian River to tie the game at four. Once again, Miami Dade pulled ahead with a one-run lead in the ninth inning, but in the bottom of the ninth, Shields came through again, singling down the left-field line on an 0-2 count to tie the game at five, setting the stage for the dramatic finish.

In the bottom of the tenth, The River was down again after a two-run Miami Dade home run in the top half of the inning. Refusing to give up, Indian River got a pinch-hit RBI single from Sophia Loreto, bringing the game within one. Then, with two outs, Smith delivered the game-winning missile-shot to secure the 8-7 victory.

Kassidy Pontbriant earned the win, pitching an impressive nine and one-third innings, allowing five hits and five runs (three earned) while striking out six. Offensively, the team demonstrated great discipline at the plate, drawing a total of seven walks and adding four stolen bases on 16 hits for the day.

Indian River travels next on Saturday, March 22, to challenge Central Florida (Ocala) at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m.
