Two Home Wins Over St. Petersburg
FORT PIERCE, FL - Indian River was victorious against St. Petersburg 7-3 on Saturday, April 5. The River struck early in the first inning, then added another run in the second after a Jordyn Lillis RBI single down the right field line. Indian River tallied 12 total hits throughout the game with Sarah Phipps, Kassidy Pontbriant, Braylee Shields, and Thaima Maximiliana each collecting two hits. Freshman catcher Moesha de Paula led the team with 2 RBIs, and fellow freshman Braylee Shields led the team with 3 stolen bases.
St. Petersburg tried to battle back, scoring one run in the top of the fifth, sixth, and seventh, but could not overcome the deficit. J'dah Girigorie earned the win for The River, allowing no runs on just one hit in four innings of work. The sophomore struck out six and walked none. Abril Gomez and Alexa Bethel each appeared in relief for The River and closed out the final 3 innings.
The River won big in the second game of the conference doubleheader, with an 11-2 run-rule final score. St. Petersburg opened the scoring in the top of the first on some uncharacteristic errors by Indian River's defense. However, Indian River jumped right back on top in the bottom half of the inning. Presley Smith hit her seventh home run of the season, and Moesha de Paula singled to right field, each scoring two runs.
A double by Smith in the second inning extended The River's lead to 6-2. The team scored five additional runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. Kassidy Pontbriant doubled, scoring two runs, and Thaima Maximiliana homered to left field, scoring three runs. Indian River piled up 13 hits in the game, with Sarah Phipps and Pontbriant each collecting three hits. Phipps and Anaise Piar each stole multiple bases, with the team collectively stealing another seven to match game one's total.
J'dah Girigorie earned the win for The River, allowing no earned runs on just two hits over four innings. She struck out another six batters and again walked none. Freshman Abril Gomez threw one inning of scoreless ball for The River in relief, surrendering zero hits, striking out one, and walking none.
