Indian River Sweeps Conference Doubleheader on Sophomore Day

FORT PIERCE, FL - Indian River won both games of the conference doubleheader on a special celebration day for the sophomore class. The River defeated Santa Fe College in game one on Saturday, April 26 by a score of 7-2. Indian River took an early lead in the first inning thanks to RBIs from Kassidy Pontbriant and Thaima Maximiliana. They extended their lead to 4-0 in the second inning with another single from Pontbriant.

Santa Fe fought back, scoring one run each in the top of the sixth and seventh innings, but the output was not nearly enough to overcome the deficit. Pontbriant collected three RBIs, going 2-for-4, while Maximiliana, Sophia Loreto, and Presley Smith each added multiple hits in the contest. The River showed patience at the plate, drawing four walks, and ran wild on the bases, stealing eight. J'dah Girigorie pitched a complete game, allowing only two runs on six hits over seven innings, with nine strikeouts and just one walk.

The River celebrated again with a 5-3 victory in game two, completing the Saturday sweep over the Saints. The team's performance was highlighted by solid pitching, timely hitting, and aggressive base-running. The scoring began in the bottom of the second for an early 1-0 lead. Indian River scored three more runs in the bottom of the third and added one insurance run in the bottom of the sixth. Kassidy Pontbriant, Taylor Cochran, Thaima Maximiliana, and Jordyn Lillis each contributed with timely hits. Presley Smith drew two walks, and the team stole another six bases, adding to The River's offensive output.

Additionally, the defense was sharp, turning two important double plays to stifle some of Santa Fe's momentum. Sophomores Hanna Deschambault and Alexa Bethel both had strong performances in the circle. Deschambault earned the win, giving up just one earned run on five hits over five innings of work. Bethel provided crucial relief, helping to shut down Santa Fe's offense in the last two innings, including recording two strikeouts.

Next Up: Indian River travels to Eastern Florida State for a doubleheader on Monday, April 28 (4:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m.).
