Indian River Goes 4-0 on the Weekend
MADEIRA, FL - Indian River easily dispatched the Tallahassee State Eagles on Saturday, 13-0, to open day two of the CMI Tournament.
The River got on the board in the bottom of the first inning after Alvey walked and Loreto grounded out, each scoring one run. Indian River scored five runs on four hits in the bottom of the second inning. A wild pitch scored one run, Piar singled, scoring two runs, Alvey doubled, scoring one run, and Smith doubled, scoring one run.
The River added six runs on four hits in the bottom of the third inning. Seabrook grounded out, scoring one run, Shields singled, scoring one run, Alvey drew a walk, scoring one run, Gendron singled, scoring two runs, and Loreto singled, scoring one run.
Wilkinson earned the win in the circle for Indian River. The pitcher allowed one hit and zero runs over three innings, striking out three and walking none. Gomez pitched one and one-third innings of scoreless ball in relief, surrendering zero hits, striking out one, and walking one.
Piar, Gendron, Johnson, Shields, Loreto, Wolfe, Smith, Kramer, and Alvey each collected one hit in the win. Piar and Gendron each drove in two runs for The River. Overall, the team showed patience at the plate, tallying five walks in the game. Piar, Shields, and Alvey each stole multiple bases, and The River was aggressive on the base paths, swiping nine bases in the win.
Indian River continued its strong play in game two, defeating Pensacola State College 7-2 to finish a perfect 4-0 on the weekend.
Alvey collected four hits in four at-bats in a dominant performance, tripling in the fifth inning, singling in the first and fourth innings, and adding another single in the seventh. Pensacola State College got on the board in the bottom of the third inning with a single by McKeown. Indian River captured the lead, 2-1, in the top of the fourth after Gendron grounded out and Smith doubled to center field, each scoring one run.
Pensacola State tied the game at two in the bottom of the fourth after Anderson grounded into a fielder's choice. In the top of the fifth, The River broke the tie when Piar singled, scoring one run. Alvey followed with a triple to extend the lead to 5-2.
Wilkinson once again earned the win for Indian River, giving up one hit and zero runs over three innings, striking out five and walking one. Eekhoff started in the circle for The River, surrendering four hits and two runs over three and one-third innings, striking out three and walking one. McDonald appeared in relief in the seventh to help close out the win.
Indian River collected 11 hits in the game. Gendron led the middle of the lineup with three RBIs. Piar also contributed to the win, collecting two hits in three at-bats.
Indian River now looks forward to starting conference play as they open by hosting Seminole State on February 28.
