FORT PIERCE, FL - Indian River fell short in a doubleheader against Miami Dade College on Tuesday, dropping game one 5-1 and game two in a close 3-2 battle.
Miami Dade College was first to get on the board in game one, scoring in the first inning when Haggerty doubled to bring in two runs. Handa earned the win for Miami Dade, surrendering six hits and one run over seven innings while striking out five and walking one. Wilkinson opened the game for The River, giving up six hits and four runs over five innings, with five strikeouts and one walk.
Valdes, Gomez, Shields, Seabrook, Wolfe, and Terito each collected one hit for The River. Wolfe led Indian River with one run batted in, going 1-for-2 on the day.
Game two proved to be a tighter contest, as both teams were strong in the circle, but Miami Dade edged out a 3-2 victory. Indian River out-hit Miami Dade 10 to six despite the loss.
The River got on the board early in the first inning when Alvey doubled to score one run. Miami Dade tied the game in the top of the fifth after Rivera laid down a sacrifice bunt. In the sixth inning, Miami Dade broke the tie when an error scored one run, followed by a single from Haggerty to extend the lead to 3-1.
Eekhoff started in the circle for The River and recorded 15 outs, allowing six hits and three runs (one earned) over five innings while striking out eight and walking one. Salvino earned the win for Miami Dade, giving up 10 hits and two runs over seven innings with three strikeouts and one walk.
Piar, Eekhoff, and Alvey each collected two hits for The River. Alvey provided a spark in the middle of the lineup, leading Indian River with two RBIs while going 2-for-4 on the day. The River also collected three stolen bases despite the loss.
The River now looks to bounce back on Saturday as they travel to the College of Central Florida for a doubleheader.
