The River Powers Past Hillsborough in Two-game Sweep

TAMPA, FL - Indian River swept Hillsborough Community College on Thursday, earning a 23-5 victory in game one followed by a 9-0 win in game two.

In game one, de Paula drove in seven runs on four hits to lead Indian River past Hillsborough 23-5. de Paula hit a home run to left field in the fifth, scoring three runs, singled in the second, scoring two runs, singled in the first, scoring one run, and singled in the fourth, scoring one run.

Indian River got on the board in the top of the first inning after Shields singled, scoring one run, Seabrook singled, scoring one run, Loreto doubled, scoring two runs, de Paula singled, scoring one run, Piar tripled, scoring two runs, and Shields singled, scoring one run.

A single by de Paula and a fly out by Alvey helped The River extend its early lead in the second.

The River added to its early lead in the top of the third inning when Loreto singled, scoring two runs, Johnson singled, scoring one run, and Means lined out, scoring one run.

Indian River added to its lead with five runs in the top of the fifth inning thanks to home runs by Gendron and de Paula.

Gomez earned the win for The River. The pitcher allowed four hits and three runs (two earned) over three innings, striking out four and walking none. McDonald threw one inning of zero-run ball in relief. The reliever surrendered zero hits, striking out two and walking one.

The River tallied 26 hits in the game. de Paula and Loreto were a force together in the lineup, as they each collected four hits for the team. Piar, Johnson, Shields, Seabrook, and Kramer each collected multiple hits in the game. The River stole seven bases.

In game two, Indian River defeated Hillsborough 9-0 thanks in part to a six-run third inning. Smith tripled, scoring one run, Loreto homered to left field, scoring three runs, Alvey drew a walk, scoring one run, and Gendron hit a sacrifice fly, scoring one run.

The River added one run in the second after Shields walked.

Gendron earned the win for The River. The starting pitcher allowed two hits and zero runs over five innings, striking out four and walking one.

Loreto, the number seven hitter for The River, led the way with three runs batted in. The infielder went 1-for-3 on the day. Gendron led the team with two hits in two at-bats. Overall, The River showed patience at the plate, drawing 11 walks and tallying five stolen bases.
