FORT MYERS, FL- The River softball dropped both games of Tuesday's doubleheader against Florida SouthWestern State College, falling 7-5 in a heartbreaking Game 1 loss before dropping Game 2 by a score of 6-2.
In the opener, Indian River battled back to tie the game in the top of the sixth inning thanks to a single by Jaci Alvey and a ground out by McKenzie Gibson before Florida SouthWestern State College answered in the bottom half of the inning to secure the win.
The River first got on the board in the top of the third inning after Anaise Piar doubled down the left field line and Florida SouthWestern State College committed an error, with each play bringing in a run.
Florida SouthWestern State College took a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the fourth inning after Basso homered to left field for a three-run shot.
Marissa Wilkinson started in the circle for Indian River, allowing five hits and five runs (three earned) over five innings while striking out three and walking three. Shields led The River offensively with two hits in four at-bats, while Piar, Gibson, and Alvey each drove in one run.
In Game 2, Florida SouthWestern State College struck early with a run in the first inning before extending its lead with a run in the second and another in the third.
Emma Eekhoff started in the circle for The River, allowing seven hits and five runs over three and one-third innings while striking out three and walking five.
Offensively, Avery Gendron, Ava Wolfe, and Alvey each collected one hit for Indian River. Wolfe and Alvey each drove in a run in the loss.
