The River Wraps Up 2024 Season with Hard-Fought Weekend on the Road
FORT PIERCE, FL- The Indian River State College Pioneers volleyball team concluded their 2024 season with a challenging doubleheader weekend, facing Gulf Coast State on Saturday, October 26th and Pensacola State on Sunday, October 27th. Despite their determination and competitive spirit, the Pioneers fell in both matchups, ending their season just shy of a postseason berth.
On Saturday, IRSC took on Gulf Coast State. In a match filled with close rallies and relentless play, the Pioneers fought to keep each set within reach. The first set saw IRSC battling point for point but ultimately falling 20-25. The second set presented tough resistance from Gulf Coast, with the Pioneers slipping 9-25. Regrouping for the third set, IRSC showcased resilience, pushing Gulf Coast State with another tight scoreline but eventually dropped the set 22-25.
The final game of the season took place Sunday, as the Pioneers met Pensacola State on their home court. IRSC opened the match with a rough start, falling 11-25 in the first set. The team found some footing in the second set, adjusting their strategy and pulling off impressive rallies to close the gap, but Pensacola State held their ground for a 20-25 win. In the third set, despite the Pioneers' best efforts, Pensacola sealed the game with a 10-25 score.
With these results, the Pioneers conclude their regular season in 7th place, narrowly missing the top six slots needed to secure a spot in the state tournament. As the season closes, IRSC bids farewell to two outstanding sophomores who have set the standard with their leadership, skill, and resilience. The team will continue to build this spring with a large, talented group of freshmen, eager to make strides toward greatness next season. The hunt for success is already underway, with the Pioneers setting their sights on an exciting comeback next year.
This season was a major success for the team, with IRSC volleyball achieving an 11-11 overall record and a 7-8 finish in conference play—the first .500 season the program has seen since 2020-2021. Notably, the Pioneers persevered through unexpected challenges, as five of their matches were canceled due to hurricanes Helene and Milton. Despite this adversity, the team displayed immense resilience and growth. One can only wonder how things might have played out had those matches been made up, potentially altering the outcome of an already impressive season.
