The River Battles in Conference Opener but Falls in Five at FSCJ

JACKSONVILLE, FL - Indian River State College Volleyball opened conference play on Wednesday, Sept. 3, with a road trip to Jacksonville to take on Florida State College at Jacksonville. In yet another back-and-forth battle, The River pushed the Manta Rays to the limit before ultimately falling in five sets (23–25, 25–23, 16–25, 25–23, 12–15).

The River looked sharp to start the night, racing out to a commanding lead in the opening frame. Strong serving pressure and quick transitions had Indian River in control early, but the Manta Rays steadily chipped away at the deficit. The River still held the advantage late, but a few costly errors allowed FSCJ to surge back. In the final rallies, the Manta Rays stole the momentum and completed the comeback, edging Indian River 25–23.

Indian River bounced back in the second set with renewed focus. Behind disciplined defense and more efficient swings, The River maintained a narrow edge throughout much of the frame. FSCJ tied things at 23–23, but Indian River delivered under pressure, closing with back-to-back points to secure the 25–23 win and even the match at one set apiece.

The third set belonged to FSCJ. The Manta Rays took control early and built separation with several scoring runs fueled by tough serves and opportunistic defense. The River fought to slow the momentum but couldn't overcome the deficit, dropping the set 16–25.

With their backs to the wall, The River responded. Indian River showed grit at the net and steadiness in the backcourt, keeping the set tight from start to finish. Much like the second, it came down to the final few points — and this time The River held strong, pulling out a 25–23 win to force a decisive fifth set.

The final set was a tense showdown with neither team giving an inch. The River and FSCJ traded points all the way to a 12–12 tie. In the closing moments, however, the Manta Rays strung together the final three points, escaping with a 15–12 victory and handing Indian River a narrow five-set defeat.
