The River Battles Back but Falls in Five to Lakehawks
LEESBURG, FL - Indian River State College Volleyball delivered a rollercoaster performance Saturday, Sept. 6 night against Lake–Sumter State College. Despite dropping two tough opening sets, The River rallied back behind fierce defense and renewed energy—only to narrowly fall in the fifth after a hard-fought comeback fell just short (16–25, 11–25, 25–22, 25–15, 13–15).
The Lakehawks came out with aggression and precision, opening up an early advantage behind powerful serves and tight blocking. Indian River struggled to find offensive rhythm and failed to keep pace, allowing Lake–Sumter to capture the first set decisively, 25–16.
Lake–Sumter doubled down in the second, maintaining pressure with consistent serving and forcing errors from the backcourt. The River couldn't reverse the momentum, and the Lakehawks rolled ahead with a commanding 25–11 win, putting Indian River in a deep hole early.
Facing steep odds, The River dug in and gradually turned the tide. Communication settled, serve-receive improved, and the hitters started finding open lanes. A late run helped seal the set, 25–22, as Indian River finally found traction.
Buoyed by their previous win, Indian River dominated the fourth frame. Strong defensive digs and aggressive swings allowed The River to control the pace, cruising to a 25–15 set win and forcing a tense deciding fifth.
The final set was as tight as it gets. Both teams raced point for point, with Indian River showing gritty resilience. At 13–13, the Lakehawks executed key plays in the closing rallies, ultimately closing out the 15–13 victory to edge The River in this five-set affair.
The River will now hit the road for a trip to the Panhandle next weekend. Indian River faces Gulf Coast State College on Saturday, Sept. 13, followed by a matchup at Pensacola State College on Sunday, Sept. 14.
