The River falls in Championship Game
PANAMA CITY BEACH, FL- Indian River State College fell short in the championship game on Sunday, February 2 of the Perfect Game JUCO Classic, losing to Chipola College 4-3. The Pioneers fought until the end, but the Indians pulled away late with a run in the sixth. Indian River had the tying and winning runs on base in the bottom of the seventh, but a double play ended the game. This marks the first loss of the season for the Pioneers, who now stand at 7-1.
After falling behind 1-0 in the second inning, the Pioneers took the lead 3-1 with Brett Patten's double, scoring Matty Davis. Later, Matt Lashley grounded out, scoring Patten. The game remained 3-1 until the sixth inning when Chipola scored three runs to take the lead.
Michael Malone started for the Pioneers, allowing three hits and one unearned run over three innings. He struck out three and walked two. Justin Minaberry took the loss for the Pioneers, giving up three runs on three hits while striking out one. Andris Barroso and Brian Ehrlich combined to finish the game.
Brett Patten, Nico Lopez, Sean Duffin, and Matt Lashley each collected one hit for the Pioneers.
The Pioneers will look to bounce back at home this week with games against Palm Beach State and TNXL.
