Indian River Come Up Short Against Central Florida
FORT PIERCE, FL- The River faced a challenging defeat against the College of Central Florida, losing 9-5 in Thursday's (April 24) Citrus Conference matchup. This loss brings The River's overall record to 32-14 and their conference record to 22-9, putting them in a competitive position as they approach the end of the season.
The College of Central Florida struck first, scoring three runs in the top of the first inning, thanks to a series of three singles that showcased their offensive prowess. Indian River quickly responded in the bottom of the first, narrowing the deficit with two runs driven in by Maikol Lucena's two-RBI single, demonstrating their resilience and ability to bounce back under pressure. The momentum shifted in the second inning when Indian River took the lead, making the score 5-3, fueled by a combination of timely hitting and aggressive base running.
However, the long ball proved costly for Indian River. Central Florida tied the game with a home run in the top of the third inning and then took the lead for good with another home run in the fourth, pushing the score to 6-5. This shift in momentum highlighted the importance of defensive consistency, as Indian River struggled to contain Central Florida's power hitters.
On the mound, Lucas Glendinning started for Indian River, allowing six hits and six runs over four innings while striking out seven batters. His performance, while strong in terms of strikeouts, was marred by the timely hitting of the Central Florida lineup. Justin Minaberry and Sammy Beir came in to finish the game, combining for eight strikeouts over five innings of relief, showcasing their potential as valuable assets in the pitching rotation.
Maikol Lucena was a standout player for Indian River, leading the team with two RBIs and proving to be a crucial part of the offensive strategy. Additionally, Shawn Andrade and Matt Lashley each contributed two hits, demonstrating the depth of talent within the lineup. Brett Patten showcased his speed on the bases, adding two stolen bases to his season total, which now stands at 34—second highest in the state. His ability to steal bases not only adds pressure on opposing pitchers but also creates scoring opportunities for his teammates.
As the season approaches its conclusion, Indian River will need to regroup and focus on refining their strategies. Looking ahead, they will travel to Ocala on Saturday, April 26 for a doubleheader, marking the conclusion of their Citrus Conference play for the season. This upcoming series will be crucial for the team as they aim to solidify their standing and prepare for potential postseason opportunities.
