The River Falls in Five-Set Thriller at Hillsborough
TAMPA, FL - Indian River State College Volleyball hit the road Wednesday night, squaring off with Hillsborough Community College in Tampa. The two teams traded blows in a marathon match that went the distance, with The River ultimately falling in a five-set heartbreaker (27–29, 23–25, 25–23, 25–23, 14–16).
The opening frame set the tone for what would be an all-night battle. Indian River came out aggressive, finding rhythm offensively and keeping pressure on the Hawks. Both teams traded points deep into extra play, with The River fighting off multiple set points. In the end, Hillsborough narrowly closed it out 29–27.
Momentum remained razor-thin in the second set. Indian River built an early lead behind scrappy defense and well-placed serves, but the Hawks chipped away and swung momentum with a late run. The River had chances to even the score but couldn't convert in the final rallies, dropping another nail-biter, 23–25, to fall behind two sets to none.
With their backs against the wall, The River refused to fold. Adjustments at the net and a steadier passing game fueled a turnaround, as Indian River played with urgency throughout the third set. In another tense finish, The River secured a 25–23 win to extend the match and shift momentum in their favor.
The fourth set was nearly a mirror image of the third. Indian River's hitters began finding more consistency, while the backcourt dug out tough swings from the Hawks to keep rallies alive. Once again, The River held off a late Hillsborough push, sealing another 25–23 victory and forcing a decisive fifth set.
The final frame was everything expected from two evenly matched teams. Neither side led by more than two points, and The River clawed back from multiple deficits to tie the score at 14–14. But Hillsborough capitalized on the final two rallies, escaping with a 16–14 win to edge The River in the five-set thriller.
The River now turns its focus to conference play. Indian River will travel to Jacksonville on Wednesday, Sept. 3 to face Florida State College at Jacksonville in the team's conference opener, with first serve set for 6:00 PM.
