Indian River Wins Slugfest
FORT PIERCE, FL- Both Indian River State College and Elevate came out swinging on Tuesday, February 18 but the Pioneers ultimately prevailed with a 13-8 victory, improving their record to 11-3 overall.
Indian River trailed for the first five innings, but a six-run explosion in the bottom of the fifth gave them a 10-5 lead—one they wouldn't relinquish. The Pioneers added three more runs over the next three innings to secure the win.
The offense was firing on all cylinders, racking up 13 hits. Jake Weatherspoon provided a big boost in the middle of the lineup, driving in three runs, including his second home run of the season. Maikol Lucena continued his red-hot start, going 3-for-4 at the plate. The Pioneers saw contributions up and down the lineup, with eight different players recording hits and four players tallying multiple hits.
Indian River showed patience at the plate, drawing seven walks, while also staying aggressive on the bases with seven stolen bags.
On the mound, Jomari Philostin was a key bright spot, throwing two scoreless innings while striking out five and earning his first career win. Five different Pioneer pitchers took the mound, combining for a season-high 19 strikeouts.
Indian River returns to action at home on Thursday at 5 p.m., kicking off a three-game series against Citrus Conference rival Florida Southwestern.
