FORT PIERCE, FL - Indian River split the doubleheader with State College of Florida (SCF) on Saturday, April 5 after losing game one 4-0 and winning game two 14-6. This is the second time this year that Indian River has dropped a Citrus Conference series. The River is now 28-10 overall and 18-6 in Citrus Conference play.
For the second straight game, Indian River was shut out by State College of Florida despite a strong pitching performance, falling 4-0. Shane Lavin struck out ten batters over five innings, allowing only four hits and two runs. The long ball hurt The River, as they gave up two home runs—accounting for the majority of the Manatees' offense.
Maikol Lucena and Jason Lashley each collected two hits for Indian River. As a whole, the offense couldn't get anything going, tallying just four hits and striking out eleven times.
The offense finally came alive in game two, as Indian River run-ruled SCF 14-6 in eight innings. Brett Patten led the way with four hits, three RBIs, and one home run. The scoreless streak ended quickly when The River got on the board in the bottom of the first with a Scout Simpson RBI double. SCF took a 3-1 lead in the top of the third, but Indian River bounced back, scoring in the following innings to secure the run-rule victory.
Three different pitchers took the mound for the much-needed win. Jonathan Wolaver got the start, giving up two hits and three runs over two and two-thirds innings. Sammy Beir earned the win, throwing three and one-third innings, allowing two runs, and striking out three. Justin Minaberry earned the save, giving up four hits over two innings and striking out two. Indian River finished with 18 hits, led by Brett Patten with four and Shawn Andrade with three. Six different players recorded multiple hits, and four players stole bases.
The River will be back home this Thursday, April 10 as they host former Southern Conference rival Miami Dade in Citrus Conference play.
